Memoricide Spoiled for Scars of Mirrodin

Memoricide is essentially a reprint of an old favorite Cranial Extraction (minus the “arcane,” of course).  Not the bombtastic revelation I was hoping for in our next Scars of Mirrodin spoiler, but that’s alright.  Memoricide will be an excellent card if prefaced in standard by Duress and Inquisition of Kozilek.  It could also be powerful if cast alongside a Conundrum Sphinx or, dare I say, a Merfolk Spy?   Ok, that’s pushing it – let’s pair Memoricide with Telepathy then, shall we?

Best Merfolk of Magic the Gathering

Grand Prix Columbus just wrapped up last weekend, and though I don’t often pay close attention to Legacy format (you want how much for that piece of cardboard?),  there was one rather intriguing outcome to this tourney.  The first place winner was pro-circuit regular Tomoharu Saito, and to victory he piloted a deck that might’ve taken some by surprise (including Saito himself!) – Merfolk.  Indeed, the scaly fish charged to the win, and good for them!  Their preeminence has been largely unknown since the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor rotation, and to commemorate their newly won success, I thought it might be a fine time to take a trip down the hallowed halls of fishdom where we’ll mount a bust upon twenty pedestals of achievement.  The top 20 best merfolk achievers of all time (according to me, at least).

20. Tidal Courier

Tidal Courier Best Merfolk of Magic the GatheringSo he’s the weakest link in a tribal loving cycle of cards, sure, but Tidal Courier is far from a worthless tailfin.  Especially among novice Magic players who sometimes struggle to choose the best time to pop a blue card drawing sorcery, the Courier is a godsend.  In a merfolk heavy deck he can be dropped at any time in the game, draw a player 1-3 merfolk cards, chump an incoming attacker, and typically die a more or less accomplished death.  In the best case scenario, he’s even an evasive attacker against the stalemate, and with a couple merfolk lords lending him some extra muscle he could even strike a final blow.  Yet even without the backup, he’s still more than earned his esteemed 20th slot.
